I’m glad we got a brief glimpse at a more vulnerable side of the series’ protagonist, but I wish Ordinal Scale saw that through to its conclusion, rather than regressing right back to the overpowered Kirito who needs to save his troubled Asuna. Kirito is often criticized for being an uninteresting, overpowered and one-note character, so I was hoping Ordinal Scale would add a bit of depth and more dimension to his character. At least, that how it starts. Thanks to a turn of events the movie flips back to the aforementioned Kirito-Asuna dynamic I was hoping would be entirely absent. Ordinal Scale flips that on its head, putting Kirito in a position where he isn’t the all-powerful hero, giving Asuna a bit of time to shine as a talented and capable person who isn’t just a plot device that needs rescuing. I really appreciated this shift in character dynamic, as Asuna has all too often been made the “damsel in distress” who the great Kirito must rescue. Meanwhile, Kirito isn’t particularly interested or skilled at the AR game and would much prefer to dive back into the world of VR.
